Wiseman's Village June 2007 - Jonathan was invited to join this group exhibition in China. It was held at what turned out to be a show house type development which was built to try and sell a new village being build about 50km outside of the city. The developer had asked a group of artists to put on an exhibition to help promote their selling. In China this is quite common and artists don't see any contradiction or compromise. Jonathan was slightly shocked to start with but created an installation that commented on the name of the development, 'Wiseman's Village'. The whole place felt like it was built on sand, even the show house was of a very poor quality, and in a similar way to most Chinese housing development it felt over priced and unattainable for all but the very rich. |
